Below are some suggested guidelines for purchasing a used transmission.

red arrow You never really know for certain what you are buying when you purchase a used transmission - therefore you should not purchase a used transmission unless it comes with a replacement warranty.
red arrow When you find a used transmission you are interested in purchasing, ask the seller for the mileage on the transmission.  If the transmission has more than 150,000 miles it would be advisable to look further.
red arrow Be sure to consider any shipping cost into your total cost before placing an order for a used transmission.  Some suppliers offer free shipping.
red arrow When you receive the used transmission, follow (or have the installer follow) the installation guidelines exactly - otherwise you risk voiding the warranty.
red arrow If the seller of the used transmission requires your core transmission, be sure you are being paid at least $75 for your core. 
red arrow If you encounter a problem with the transmission you purchase, contact the seller immediately to get the problem worked out.  The more time that passes the more difficult it is to get matters resolved.

Used Transmission Warranty

Used transmission warranties typically come with a 90-day or 1-year warranty.  Some suppliers of used transmissions may offer an extended warranty for added charge.  Used transmission warranties have certain restrictions and requirements that must be adhered too.  You must read these provisions carefully and follow the installation requirements to the tee.  Be sure to provide the installation requirements to the installer if you are not doing the installation yourself.

Used Transmission Cost

Prices for used automatic transmissions vary considerably from one vehicle to another.  For example, you can purchase a used automatic transmission with a 1-year warranty for a Ford F-150 pickup for between $500 and $600.  The average used transmission price for a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban is around $1,000.  For a 2004 Jaguar S Type you can expect to pay $1500 or more for a good quality used transmission.
