  The Automatic Transmission
...  history and evolution

Although some of the components and technologies used in today's automatic transmissions were developed in the early 1900s, the first passenger vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission did not occur until General Motors introduced the "Hydra-Matic" transmission in the 1940 Oldsmobile. It was a whopping $57 option. Since then, the journey has been filled with remarkable breakthroughs in transmission technology and design. Today's automatic transmissions are far more sophisticated, complex and efficient than ever before.
